Mitsubishi No. 5 Building (1905-1963)

Mitsubishi Building No. 5 was designed a few years after the completion of Mitsubishi Ichigokan (1894-1968). The chief designer was Sone Tatsuzo, a student of Josiah Conder. Beautiful elevation drawings remain, but there is also an alternative design for just the roof (which matches the photograph taken after completion). With the introduction of steam heating, chimneys for fireplaces were eliminated, and the height of the small roof was lowered. It is likely that the aim was to create a roof design that was not too assertive, in order to highlight Mitsubishi Ichigokan and No. 2, which stand on corners.
