Q: During this COVID-19 pandemic, the office is being redefined. What is your ideal image of an office?

A: The best place is one that can accommodate creative work, clerical work that requires concentration on one person, and work that requires discussion with a large group of people, all in one space. Also, while telework has become widespread due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the idea that offices are unnecessary has begun to emerge, I think there will be a demand for excellent environments that cannot be achieved at home or in cafes. For example, there are now offices where you take your shoes off, but it might be good if the floor stimulates the soles of your feet. In addition to the effects of foot massage, it stimulates the brain, so if you walk there and then brainstorm, you might be more likely to come up with good ideas. It would be nice if you could create original programs for scents that improve concentration, lighting, and music. If you can create a space that suits each individual, just having such an attractive office will attract talented people and reduce turnover. I think the quality of the office space will be directly linked to the value of the company, that is, its management.

Q: What do you do to maintain your health?

Exercise, diet, sleep, mental health, and oral care are important for health. I think mental health is the most important of all. No matter how healthy your diet is or how much sleep you get, if your mind is not in good condition, your performance will not improve. The phrase "mind, technique, and body," which is often used in the world of sports, also starts with the mind. However, controlling your mind is not easy. I myself have repeatedly tried and failed to find my own way of self-conditioning through food and sleep. For example, I wake up at the same time on weekdays and holidays. The key is to expose yourself to the morning sun at the same time every day to reset your internal environment, so that you feel sleepy at the same time and can get a stable sleep. Of course, you may go to bed later, but the time you wake up will not change. If you feel sleepy during the day, take a nap. A good rule of thumb is to take a nap for about 15 minutes. In any case, it is especially recommended in the telework era to expose yourself to the morning sun at the same time every day. When it comes to food, I recommend "fermented foods." There is data that shows that the state of the intestines and the brain are closely related, so I try to consume fermented foods that improve the intestinal environment on a regular basis. I myself have become so fascinated with fermented foods that I even make my own natto and shio-koji (salt-based rice malt) [Photo 1].

Q: What would you like to challenge yourself with and what is your next goal?

A: I have previously done self-conditioning using traditional Japanese culture such as tea ceremony and flower arrangement, and it was a time of deep spirituality. Tea ceremony in particular has a good atmosphere, and the careful and slow movements are completely out of the ordinary, which helped me to concentrate. I feel that if we make more use of these things and introduce them casually, it will have a positive effect on improving the mental health and dignity of employees, and will lead to higher quality communication. Also, even if you are not interested in health, it may be an opportunity to learn the importance of keeping your mind in order. I believe that by providing many entry points, we can gradually change even those with low health literacy.

Today I talked about how mental health and breathing are fundamentally important, but the next most important thing is oral care, which is the area I'm most interested in right now. Japanese people have a lower awareness of oral care than people in Sweden or the United States. Many Japanese people only care for their teeth with a toothbrush every day, but I want to make flossing a part of my daily routine. It is said that only 58% of plaque can be removed with a toothbrush alone, and if the rest is not replaced with floss, periodontal disease is likely to worsen, which can lead to an increased risk of dementia and diabetes. By rebranding the dental clinic, I would like to make it a place where people can go with the same feeling as a beauty salon. My current goal is to make oral care the standard in Japan's health management initiatives. I also want to make my dream of becoming a professional golfer come true.
