CLT floor structure system
The floors of mid- to high-rise buildings will be made of wood.
This is the first case in Japan where CLT has been used as a structural material in an office building with 6 or more floors. Now that there is a demand for effective use of domestic timber, we must expand the possibilities of using wood not only for detached houses but also for large-scale mid- to high-rise buildings. In the first place, wooden construction has advantages that reinforced concrete and steel frame construction do not have. Let's explore the hidden charms of wooden construction that are not apparent on the surface, such as the reduction in the weight of the building, the reduction in the burden on the foundation structure such as piles, and the promotion of speedy construction with dry construction methods.
Technology that uses CLT for structural floors
CLT (Cross Laminated Timber) is a wood-based material made by laminating boards called laminas with the fibers rotated 90 degrees, and is a notable material that can be widely used as a strong surface material. It is used as a flooring material, but the most difficult issue with wooden construction is fire resistance. Gypsum material is poured on the CLT floor, and the lower floor ceiling surface behind the slab is sandwiched between reinforced gypsum boards and calcium silicate boards to ensure fire resistance.
The key to the innovation is the method of joining the steel frame and CLT, which are dissimilar materials. Here, the CLT is not precisely machined to precisely connect to the steel frame. Instead, it is simply cut to the specified size in a factory and placed on top of the steel frame on-site. Lag screws are hammered into the CLT surface at regular intervals, and top concrete is poured in place to finish. The screws prevent the CLT from shifting sideways and fix it in place.
The floors on the 3rd and 4th floors are fire-resistant for 2 hours (reinforced gypsum board + calcium silicate board).
The floors on the 5th to 8th floors are made of one-hour fire-resistant material (reinforced gypsum board), avoiding high costs due to over-specification.
Installing wooden louvers on ALC exterior walls
Wooden louvers have been installed on facade. Wood also fulfills the functions required of exterior walls, which are to block sunlight and control visibility. The louvers are denser on the lower floors and fewer in number on the upper floors, adjusting the degree of openness of visibility required on each floor. The exterior wall material is ALC (lightweight aerated concrete) boards. To prevent rainwater from entering, the louvers are fixed in place with fasteners that are pre-embedded in the ALC when it is manufactured, rather than penetrating the exterior wall. Additionally, because wooden louvers are made of natural materials and are used in high places, we verified a support method that would reliably guarantee durability and safety against wind and rain.
