Study on the future vision of the Otemachi-Yurakucho district as a smart city

In the Otemachi, Marunouchi and Yurakucho area, efforts are underway to realize a smart city that introduces new next-generation technologies. In formulating the Otemachi, Marunouchi and Yurakucho Smart City Vision, an initiative to depict that future, we analyzed, proposed, and created images of the future, including pedestrian spaces where pedestrians and next-generation mobility coexist and can flexibly respond to changes in activity, transportation hubs where multiple transportation methods intersect smartly, and underground spaces that allow smooth transfers between mobility methods.
Pedestrian spaces are already bustling and full of amenities, but these will be further enhanced and redesigned through the introduction of new technologies and new forms of mobility. Rather than being simply for pedestrians, new forms of mobility such as personal mobility and pallet-type mobility will assist people, creating walkable spaces that further promote physical communication between people. There will no longer be any boundaries between roadside stores and sidewalks, or sidewalks and roadways, and buildings and infrastructure will be seamlessly connected, allowing for flexible responses to ever-changing activities.

At transportation hubs, instead of being limited by the conventional concept of roads and sidewalks, road transport systems will be constructed that combine multiple means of transport, such as pedestrians with different speeds and uses, low- and medium-speed personal mobility, self-driving cars, and public transport systems. What is important here is switching between means of transport. Design transportation hubs that connect the flow of travel smartly.
The underground space will become a nodal space for architecture and mobility, with access to subways and underground passageways, and connections to parking lots. Here too, a system that seamlessly switches between means of "mobility" will be introduced, creating new flows. New technologies such as autonomous driving will enable efficient parking, and surplus parking space will be converted into new mobility hangars, taxi pools, lively spaces, and more. For example, mobile pallet-type mobility will be introduced to change the quality of the space. New liveliness will be created in underground spaces that have been used mainly for transportation and parking.
The key to realizing these visions of the future is to create a seamless continuity between architecture and infrastructure.
Additionally, we are continuing to consider how to organize issues and develop a roadmap for realizing these future visions.
