Thinking about the possibilities of urban development through entertainment
We held an in-house event inviting top artists.
Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junichi Tanisawa) held an internal event last May to consider future urban development, "Entertainment and Japanese Cities: Thoughts from Those Who Know the World." The event featured a collaborative AR performance by KAZU, a pioneer in the world of 3D holograms, and KENTO MORI, a dance artist active on the world's highest stage, followed by a talk session in which they answered questions from employees.
In August 2020, we announced "SMAHOLODEO," a tool that allows users to easily experience holograms using a smartphone. This event was held after an engineer from our R&D Promotion Department who developed the tool met KAZU during the development process, with the aim of experiencing the world of entertainment, which is incorporating the latest technology and further expanding the scope of expression.
By experiencing the performance, participants were able to gain new perspectives that can be applied to future architecture and urban design. At the same time, the event was highly thought-provoking, providing insight into how the fusion of visualization techniques such as "Smartphone Rodeo" and holograms, AR/VR, and entertainment, which is constantly evolving, can change the projects we undertake and future urban development.
Dynamic performance using the latest technology
The first half of the event took place in Mitsubishi Jisho Design Jisho Sekkei Head Office studio, which is usually used for meetings and events, and featured an AR dance live performance featuring dynamic AR effects using "real-time motion capture," which uses sensors attached to Kento Mori's entire body to detect the depth of space and specific body movements and generate AR effects on the spot. Kento Mori delivered a first-class dance performance that was in line with the standards of some of the world's most renowned top artists.
In the second half of the event, Kazu and Kento Mori engaged in a dialogue based on questions collected from our employees. They discussed the possibilities of creating a "city that everyone can be excited about" and the prospects for tolerant architecture that will serve as a place to accept and nurture the expressions of diverse people, reaffirming the importance of players with diverse perspectives working together across boundaries to create a truly prosperous society.

For this event, our employees temporarily set up a simple stage in our office, bringing with them KM1, the studio to which Kento Mori belongs, and an AR kit jointly developed by MOMENT FACTORY (a world-leading digital art collective from Canada). The highly accurate AR performance demonstrated that high-quality production is possible without being constrained by the quality or scale of the space. The fusion of architectural space, expressive methods using the latest technology, and entertainment using this technology provided clues for proposals that go beyond conventional wisdom. Through events like this, we will continue to explore the nature of architecture and cities from a broader perspective, exploring the possibilities of rich Architectural Design and urban development.

"SMAHOLODEO" Ⓡ- A desktop tool that puts smartphone information into the air
The potential of mixed reality (MR) technology, which blends reality and virtual reality, is expanding in the field of Architectural Design. It allows virtual buildings to appear before your eyes, making invisible heat and air visible and allowing you to manipulate them interactively. This technology is also attracting attention as a communication tool that enables the sharing of three-dimensional, intuitive images.
In 2020, Mitsubishi Jisho Design 's R&D Promotion Department began developing simple tools to make mixed reality more accessible. The first of these is "SMAHOLODEO." This desktop tool levitates smartphone display information, allowing figures and CG to appear in three dimensions and convey performances and messages. Made of paper, it is easy to assemble and portable. It can be freely designed to match the video content and can also be used for presentations and as a novelty item (Patent No. 6656460 / Design No. 1664201).
The R&D Promotion Department is a cross-disciplinary department that spans the entire company and includes not only engineers, but also people with a variety of other skills, such as Architectural Design and planners.
Aiming to "connect technology and life to create rich spaces," we connect with players active at the forefront of each field and tackle a wide range of themes, including promoting wooden construction and the use of wood, and proposing research into smart cities.
