Thinking about the possibilities of urban development through entertainment
We held an in-house event inviting top artists.
Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junichi Tanisawa) held an in-house event last May to consider future urban development, "Entertainment and Japanese Cities: Thoughts from Those Who Know the World." The event invited KAZU, a pioneer in the world of 3D holograms, and KENTO MORI, a dance artist active on the world's highest stage, to perform an AR performance in collaboration between the two, followed by a talk session in which the two answered questions from employees.
In August 2020, we announced "SMAHOLODEO," a tool that allows users to easily experience holograms using a smartphone. This event was held after an engineer from our R&D Promotion Department who developed the tool met KAZU during the development process, with the aim of experiencing the world of entertainment, which is incorporating the latest technology and further expanding the scope of expression.
By experiencing the performance, participants were able to gain new perspectives that can be applied to future architecture and urban design. At the same time, the event was highly thought-provoking, providing insight into how the fusion of visualization techniques such as "Smartphone Rodeo" and holograms, AR/VR, and entertainment, which is constantly evolving, can change the projects we undertake and future urban development.
Dynamic performance using the latest technology
In the first half of the event, Mitsubishi Jisho Design Head Office Studio, which is usually used for meetings and events, was used as the stage for an AR dance live performance using dynamic AR productions using "real-time motion capture" that generates AR effects on the spot based on sensors attached to KENTO MORI's entire body, sensing the depth of the space and specific body movements. The world's top artists presented a first-class dance performance that was in demand.
In the second half of the event, KAZU and KENTO MORI held a talk session based on questions submitted by our employees. They discussed the possibilities of creating a "town that everyone can be excited about" and the prospects for tolerant architecture that will be a place to accept and nurture the expressions of diverse people, and the importance of players with various perspectives working together across boundaries to create a truly prosperous society.

This time, our employees set up a temporary stage in the office, and brought in KM1, which KENTO MORI belongs to, and an AR kit jointly developed by MOMENT FACTORY (the world's leading digital art group from Canada), to perform a high-precision AR performance, proving that high-quality production is possible without being restricted by the quality or size of the space. By fusing architectural space with a method of expression using the latest technology and entertainment using this, we were able to find a clue to a proposal that goes beyond what we already know. Through events such as these, we will continue to explore the state of architecture and cities from a broader perspective and explore the possibilities of rich Architectural Design and urban development.
Introducing the speakers who performed the collaborative performance

"SMAHOLODEO" Ⓡ- A desktop tool that puts smartphone information into the air
The potential of MR (Mixed Reality) technology, which fuses reality and virtuality, is expanding in the field of Architectural Design. It allows virtual architecture to appear before your eyes, visualize invisible heat and air, and handle them interactively. This technology is also attracting attention as a communication tool that allows for the sharing of three-dimensional, intuitive images.
Mitsubishi Jisho Design began developing simple tools to make MR more accessible in 2020 through its R&D Promotion Department. The first of these is "SMAHOLODEO". It is a desktop tool that makes smartphone display information float in the air, and figures and CG appear in three dimensions to convey performances and messages. It is made of paper, is easy to assemble, and easy to carry. It can be freely designed to match the video content, and can also be used for presentations and novelties (Patent No. 6656460 / Design No. 1664201).
The R&D Promotion Department is a cross-disciplinary department that spans the entire company and is made up of people with a variety of skills, including not only engineers, but also Architectural Design and planners.
With the aim of "connecting technology and life to create rich spaces," we connect with players active at the forefront of various fields and work on a wide range of themes, including promoting wooden construction and wood-based construction, and proposing research on smart cities.
