Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junichi Tanizawa) is pleased to announce the full scope of its projects, including technical details, for "Arabi-An Tea House" a teahouse and furniture pavilion exhibited at Dubai Design Week 2023 (November 7-12, 2023) in Dubai, and "Veneti-An Tea House," exhibited at the 18th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia (2023).

The second project following "Veneti-An Tea House" that puts resource recycling and local responsiveness into practice

Arabi-An Tea House named after the English word "Arabian" and the Japanese word "an," is an attempt to put into practice the "circular economy" (economic activities that create new value by making effective use of stocks) that is attracting global attention today. The teahouse is made from new materials made from food waste (tea leaves and dried fruit) found in local culture and recyclable resources (recycled paper) as building materials.
In addition, the latitude of the location where it will be installed has been incorporated into the design, achieving both universality that can be deployed around the world and local specificity. After the exhibition, the pieces will be disassembled into individual parts as a further upcycle, and then reassembled and redistributed as furniture that can be used in a variety of different ways.
This pavilion is the second exhibition following the prototype exhibited at the "Time Space Existence 2023" exhibition event at the Venice Biennale 2023, which was held from May to November 2023.

Architectural features of the "Arabi-An Tea House"

1. Generate the shape based on the latitude of the exhibition venue

The exhibition venue is located at the latitude of Dubai (25 degrees). The frame structure is based on this angle to allow for optimal introduction and shading of sunlight into the pavilion. The frame is made of laminated Miura-ori wire, and the joint parts, which are the key to the structure, have a curved design that allows for smooth distribution of force. This is an expansion of the joint technology that Mitsubishi Jisho Design has been researching as part of its R&D.
The system of this pavilion is designed to suit the latitude of the installation location; the recent exhibition in Venice was designed based on the local latitude (45 degrees), responding to the characteristics of each region.

Left: Mock-up of the joint. Right: The joints that make up the entire pavilion. The joints, made from tea leaves, are angled at 25 degrees and extend in eight directions, and are inserted into the recycled paper shaft.

3. Developments after the exhibition period ends

After the exhibition period ends, "Arabi-An Tea House" will be disassembled into its individual parts. Potential owners will be able to create the shape they want online and receive the components along with an NFT version of the assembly diagram. 3D data will also be provided, allowing users to create and expand parts using a 3D printer or NC machine.
Arabi-An Tea House was designed with the intention of being used as furniture, and can be said to be a tea room made up of furniture parts.

"By developing two new buildings, Veneti-An Tea House and Arabi-An Tea House, using recycled materials from different countries and adapting them to the latitude of their installation locations, we were able to carry out practical trials and demonstrations at a circular economy Architectural Design firm, and the buildings have been acclaimed both internationally as spaces for the traditional Japanese tea ceremony and as artworks. By disclosing the technical aspects and full details of this project, we hope to see them being developed in various ways both domestically and internationally, and to make them available to a wider audience through NFTs."
We would appreciate your coverage.

During the exhibition, a tea ceremony produced by Muchakukucha was held to entertain local people and was well received.
