Recycling resources with wood 3D printing
We will be exhibiting at Dubai Design Week 2024, which will be held in Dubai from November 5th to 10th.
Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc. (Head office: Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junichi Tanisawa) is pleased to announce that it has developed "Regenerative Wood," a production system that uses wood 3D printing, covering everything from design to construction of architecture and furniture, at its design studio and wood architecture lab. The company will also unveil "The Warp," its third prototype, a 3D printed wood building.
"The Warp" is a groundbreaking teahouse pavilion that combines traditional Japanese woodworking techniques with cutting-edge 3D printing technology. It will be exhibited for the first time at Dubai Design Week 2024, an architecture and design event to be held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates from November 5 to 10, 2024.
Experience time travel through tradition and innovation through "The Warp"
"The Warp" is made up of approximately 900 3D printed panels, each with a different shape, made from recycled wood powder, a by-product of wood processing. These panels are joined using traditional Japanese woodworking joint techniques without the use of nails or metal fittings, making them easy to assemble and disassemble on-site and easily relocate to other locations.
The concept of this exhibition is "a time travel experience that takes you from ancient Japanese traditions to the ever-innovating future city of Dubai," and a teahouse and Japanese garden will be set up in a small exhibition space of 32 m2. Visitors will pass through the garden and enter the teahouse through the Nijiriguchi entrance, where they will be enveloped in a wooden space with organically twisted curves. Visitors will be able to enjoy a new experience in which they can feel the fusion of tradition and innovation while calmly sipping tea prepared by a tea master and looking out over the rapidly growing city of Dubai. The architect who designed the teahouse will be staying on-site during the exhibition, and plans are afoot to hold tea ceremonies by tea masters and workshops on 3D printing.
"Don't waste resources" to achieve wooden construction and wood-based cities and buildings
"The Warp" is the third prototype of "Regenerative Wood" (hereinafter referred to as "the System"), a production system using wood 3D printing developed by Mitsubishi Jisho Design.
This system uses wood-based 3D printing technology to recycle resources. By reusing wood flour, a by-product of wood processing, and transforming it into a sustainable, high-value-added material (3D printer filament), it realizes a truly circular approach through the power of design. This system enables a resource cycle of reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Using wood powder generated as waste in all wood processing processes, the company manufactures its own wood-based 3D printing material that ensures stability for 3D printing. By using wood from near the project site, the company can reduce the CO2 emissions that occur when transporting raw materials, and by reducing the size of the output materials during 3D printing, they can be put into general logistics and assembled by hand, making the entire production flow environmentally friendly.
Mitsubishi Jisho Design, together with other Mitsubishi Estate Group companies, has built a continuous wood utilization network that connects everything from forestry and harvesting to lumbering, planning, design, and operation. Through this system, which aims to reduce waste generated in the wooden construction and wood-based construction process in architecture and urban environments, we will strengthen this network and promote the further use of wood.

About Mitsubishi Jisho Design Studio
Mitsubishi Jisho Design, together with other Mitsubishi Estate Group companies, has built a continuous timber utilization network that connects everything from forestry and harvesting to sawing, planning, design, and operation.
We will strengthen this network and further promote the use of wood through our "Regenerative Wood" system, which aims to reduce waste generated in the process of wooden construction and the use of wood in buildings and urban environments.
that's all
