Winner of the highest award, the Chairman's Award, in the consumer category at the 2024 Cogeneration Awards

Takasago Thermal Innovation Center achieves carbon neutrality by combining renewable energy and storage batteries

Takasago Thermal Engineering Co., Ltd. (Head office: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kazuto Kojima; hereinafter, "Takasago Thermal Engineering"), Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc. (Head office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junichi Tanizawa; hereinafter, "Mitsubishi Jisho Mitsubishi Jisho Design"), and Kandenko Corporation (Head office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Toshio Nakama; hereinafter, "Kandenko") are pleased to announce that they were recognized today for the efforts of Takasago Thermal Engineering's research facility, the Innovation Center, at the "Cogeneration Awards 2024" sponsored by the Advanced Cogeneration and Energy Utilization Center, a general incorporated foundation, by winning the Chairman's Award, the highest award in the civilian sector.

A cogeneration system (hereafter referred to as cogeneration) is a system that uses natural gas, oil, LP gas, etc. as fuel to generate electricity using engines, turbines, fuel cells, etc., and simultaneously recovers the waste heat generated during the process. The "Cogeneration Awards" are a system that recognizes cogeneration systems that excel in terms of novelty, pioneering spirit, new technology, energy conservation, etc.

Summary of the award:
The Takasago Thermal Innovation Center (Tsukubamirai City, Ibaraki Prefecture) is building a sustainable energy supply and demand system that combines renewable energy and storage batteries, based on the design concept of "sustainable architecture that combines reduced environmental impact with improved intellectual productivity."
The main power sources are solar power generation and wood biomass CHP, which also combines groundwater heat and large-capacity storage batteries. An AI-based EMS (energy management system) is used to ensure efficient facility operation.
The entire site has achieved Nearly ZEB for three years from 2020, and ZEB Ready in 2023 except for experimental power, and the office building has achieved ZEB (Net Zero Energy Building) status for four consecutive years. By purchasing green electricity, the site will be carbon neutral from 2021 onwards, using no fossil fuels at all.
It will function as a BCP base for the local area in the event of a disaster, and also as a place for hands-on learning where people can get up close and personal with air conditioning equipment and renewable energy.

  • Wood biomass CHP (Combined Heat & Power System): A system that uses wood chips as fuel to generate high-temperature combustible gas, which is then used to generate electricity while also utilizing the waste heat generated during power generation.
