Tokyo Stock Exchange Building Main Building undergoes seismic upgrade

Heiwa Real Estate Co., Ltd. (Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kiyoyuki Tsuchimoto; hereinafter referred to as "Heiwa Real Estate"), Mitsubishi Jisho Design Inc. (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junichi Tanizawa; hereinafter referred to as "Mitsubishi Jisho Design"), and Kajima Corporation (Minato City, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hiromasa Amano; hereinafter referred to as "Kajima") are pleased to announce that they have completed seismic value-up work on the roof of Tokyo Stock Exchange Building Main Building (Chuo-ku, Tokyo), which involves installing a TMD* 1 type seismic control device.

The Tokyo Stock Exchange Building Main Building has been a highly safe skyscraper since its completion in 1988 * 2. However, with the aim of strengthening its BCP performance by further improving its earthquake resistance and the safety and security of building users, the building has now undergone earthquake resistance value-upgrading work.

The D 3 SKY®-L * 3 installed on the building's roof is a TMD-type seismic control device that can handle a wide range of earthquake motion, from large earthquakes including long-period ground motion to small and medium-sized earthquakes. The building has been reborn as a state-of-the-art seismic control building, significantly reducing the building's shaking amplitude and the time during which the shaking is felt strongly, leading to the safety and security of all who use the building.

1. Tuned Mass Damper (a seismic control device that counteracts earthquake-induced building sway by using a weight attached to the building)

2. Buildings over 60 meters tall undergo special inspections (structural assessments) and ministerial certification, which require more advanced Structural Engineering than ordinary buildings.

3. Dual-direction Dynamic Damper of Simple Kajima style – Layered system (multi-stage Kajima style TMD for large earthquakes)

The earthquake resistance value-up plan was formulated jointly by Mitsubishi Jisho Design and Kajima, with Heiwa Real Estate at the center. The renovation design was carried out by a joint venture between Mitsubishi Jisho Design and Kajima, and the space-saving "D 3 SKY®-L" (developed by Kajima) that can withstand major earthquakes was adopted as a seismic control device that can make effective use of the rooftop space during renovations.

The seismic upgrade work included the installation of two 400-ton TMDs (maximum stroke ±80cm), totaling 800 tons of seismic control devices, improving the building's seismic performance to the same level as a state-of-the-art skyscraper.
Simulations using seismic motion from the Great East Japan Earthquake have confirmed that the shaking of buildings in all directions can be halved and the time during which the shaking is felt strongly can be significantly reduced.
Furthermore, the "D3SKY®-L" is a multi-stage laminated rubber TMD seismic control device, and its low-height design with a two-stage structure using specially developed laminated rubber has enabled the device to be placed below the height of the exterior roof wall, meaning that it has almost no impact on the exterior appearance of the building.

Heiwa Real Estate Since its founding 70 For over 20 years, we have been supporting urban development, primarily in the Nihonbashi Kabutocho and Kayabacho areas, and working to operate safe and secure buildings. In this project, we have installed seismic control devices utilizing cutting-edge technology in our flagship Tokyo Stock Exchange Building, ensuring even greater safety and comfort for users. Building on our many years of experience and trust, we will continue to contribute to the creation of sustainable and attractive urban areas.

Mitsubishi Jisho Design has designed numerous skyscrapers over its 135-year history since its founding. For this seismic value-up plan, we utilized that experience to implement an optimal renovation design. We will continue to be involved in Renovation and renewal of existing skyscrapers, and will meet the expectations for building a sustainable society.

Kajima has been a world leader in research and development of seismic control technology since the 1980s. The TMD-type seismic control device "D3SKY®-L" adopted in this project, which can withstand even major earthquakes, is one effective solution for countering long-period seismic motion in existing high-rise buildings. We will continue to research and develop seismic control technology and actively promote the use of this device in an effort to realize safe and secure lifestyles.
