Kumamoto Tokio Marine & Nichido Building
Kumamoto Tokio Marine & Nichido Building
This is the base of a company that was one of the first to provide disaster relief after the Kumamoto earthquake (2016). Aiming to create architecture that embodies the local recovery and identity, local timber is actively used, particularly in the pilotis, entrance and around the windows on the office floors. It conveys the appeal of the materials to the town while creating a sense of unity with the street trees. Utilizing the experience gained from the previous building, which was used as a disaster response base during the earthquake, it has achieved high earthquake resistance. It also introduces experience-based BCP measures, including emergency power generation, water supply and drainage, and a plan for using the rooms for multiple purposes in the event of an emergency.
