International House of Japan: Preservation and Reconstruction
International House of Japan: Preservation and Reconstruction
This is a preservation and restoration project for the main building of the International House of Japan, which was jointly designed by Maekawa Kunio, Yoshimura Junzo, and Sakakura Junzo and completed in 1955. The garden was designed by Ogawa Jihei (Ueji) when the building was still the residence of Iwasaki Koyata (completed in 1929). The decision to preserve and restore the building was prompted by a restoration report by the Architectural Institute of Japan.
In the midst of a struggle between renovations that would allow the building to continue to be used and maintaining the authenticity of a space that had been loved for many years, the wooden fittings were restored with small aluminum frames and double-glazed glass, and a staircase was installed in the light courtyard that was lost when the building was completed, restoring natural light to the basement.
