MEC Industry Kagoshima Spring Water Factory/Reception Building

MEC Industry Co., Ltd. was established in 2020 by seven companies including Mitsubishi Estate. This project involved the design of a building consisting of a cafeteria and meeting rooms at the Kagoshima Yusui Factory, which is the company's base.
In building a factory in a small town with a population of about 9,000 people that is becoming increasingly depopulated, we aimed to create a new type of factory that would create jobs by creating a comfortable working environment that would make people want to work there, and contribute not only to the forestry industry but also to the local economy. At the same time, the theme was to create a space that would meet multiple expectations, such as allowing employees to experience the company's wood products on a daily basis, functioning as a showroom for visitors, and making the factory a place to foster interaction with local residents.
In solving social issues such as the decline in the forestry population, regional revitalization and revitalization, the shortage of craftsmen in the construction industry, and the realization of a carbon-free society, we aim to be a "base that is loved by the local community." This will ultimately lead to increased competitiveness as a company. This plan embodies a new way of coexistence between the local community and factories in rural areas.

An open atrium with a large staircase.
A variety of uses of wood are integrated into one space, including walls made of solid cedar boards that will serve as lamina for CLT, numerous decorative square timbers woven into steel handrails, wooden louvers for the skylight, and wooden block seats that function as benches. We designed a symbolic space that embodies the company's philosophy while being within the daily movement routes of employees.

The cafeteria doubles as a break space for employees. The built-in vertical light distribution combined with reflectors made of solid cedar boards fills the room with soft light. It is an open facility that can also be used by local residents, contributing to the local community.

A bridge connecting the reception building with the office and manufacturing buildings. The handrails, made from wood produced at the factory, are removable. This is a sustainable plan that allows employees to maintain, replace, and renew them themselves.
