It enables faster circulation than the elevators and is heavily used. The interior uses materials from the region to create a friendly and familiar atmosphere. From left: Wajima lacquer bench in entrance hall; Ishikawa cedar bench of seminar room corridor (with uzukuri burnishing to bring out grain); Ishikawa cedar wall in entrance hall; Sign with futamata Japanese paper in windbreak room; Counter of locally recycled glass at general reception.Tsuemura: Some of our customers and some people within the bank were uneasy about the decision to move out of the center of town around the east exit of the station. But this bank has a tradition of welcoming new challenges. It was clear that the old building was becoming a constraint on our ability to become the kind of bank we want to become. The new tower will bring new vitality to the west exit area, which up to now has been regarded as the back side of the station. Eventually it will become a symbol of Kanazawa. We also want to contribute to raising the productivity of the region.Sumitani: That is one reason why so much attention was devoted to the external design and especially to the appearance from the West Plaza. Our rst proposal was for a vertical lattice without cross rows. That was well received, but as the design progressed we felt that the facade needed more character and expressiveness. So we submitted a new proposal, which takes a hint from the zigzag chidori pattern of shoji paper screens.Tsuemura: We were surprised by the new proposal, since all along we had been expecting the vertical lattice design. But we were also happy to see it. It was one indication of how everyone at MJS welcomed a challenge and was eager to make something good. I think we were on the same wavelength.Ikeda: This was our rst experience with creating a new building, and it was exciting from start to nish. It was a tremendous relief when the scaolding came down and we got our rst look at the exterior.Tsuemura: Our customers and others from the region love the building. Every time I see it, I feel energized.Sumitani: We picked up many hints from the culture of Kanazawa, such as the Kaga style of lattice work, the “Kaga ve colors” that are used in kimono dying, Wajima lacquerware, and Futamata Japanese paper. We took architectural elements and colors from some of them, and for others we used the materials themselves.Yamasa: The proposal contained many references to old buildings and features of Kanazawa, some of which we hadn’t known about before. For example the lighting on the ceiling of the cafeteria is a reference to the Asano and Sai rivers, which are a beloved part of the Kanazawa landscape. When we explained that to our customers on a tour of the new building, they were kind enough to say that it was like Hokkoku Bank. We were happy about that.Sumitani: We spent a lot of time thinking about how far we should make the building typical of Kanazawa. Looking at it from outside, the local elements seem fresh and special, but to residents who seem them every day the design would lack newness if everything was local. There is also interest in elements that are not found in Kanazawa. Finding the right balance while making the design expressive of Kanazawa was one of the dicult parts. Rooted in the Region – Balance Between Tradition and Challenges杖村専務:本店が駅東口の中心市街地から出ることについて、お客様や行内から不安視する声もありましたが、当行には「新しいことに積極的にチャレンジする」という風土があります。 009Year Book 2015Special Feature
