Year Book 2016Environmental ReviewThis is a facility to serve during normal times as a center to promote tourism and raise awareness of disaster prevention, and also to function as a refuge during disasters. It encloses three facilities – a meeting room, the disaster prevention and tourist center, and toilets – within a veranda-like engawa space of about 70 m. The site is located near the pine-clad islands of Matsushima, one of the celebrated Three Scenic Views of Japan. To harmonize with the landscape, the facility uses natural materials such as a tile roof and traditional charred Japanese cedar cladding. The building is a wooden structure that makes extensive use of natural energy, for example in its monitor roof for natural lighting and ventilation. The facility has a 12-m long span of laminated wood . It was designed as a exible and easy-to-use space with an earthquake resistant structure. The engawa space functions not only as a temporary refuge during disasters but also as a multi-purpose space that links interior and exterior during disaster awareness and other events. Notable Environmental Project – Yokohama Rubber Hiratsuka Factory New Technology BuildingThe brief was for a facility that would stimulate communication between researchers and facilitate synergies between dierent elds. In response, our design combines stairways with an atrium linking all seven oors to create a space where communication across oors occurs naturally. The atrium also brings air into the building, with openings at the north and south left open to enable natural ventilation. To make effective use of the heat inside the building, a ventilation window was installed at the top of the atrium to automatically release the hot air that accumulates there during the summer. During the winter, the hot air is circulated back to the lower oors. To increase the comfort of the working environment, the energy-saving Desica air conditioning system was installed to provide both air conditioning under the oor of the atrium and temperature and humidity control. A radiant cooling and heating system was chosen for meeting rooms and executive oces. On the facade, louvers with changeable angles allow a free view out while also controlling direct sunlight. 017
