The reconstruction project, completed in 2016, aimed to strengthen collaboration within the group and to set the stage for long-term growth. We invited members of the project to share their thoughts about this new head oce building, located in Tokyo’s trend-setting Shibuya district, and what it suggests about oce buildings and the future of work.TALK高橋様:当グループは、大正7(1918)年、創業者の中島董一郎が日本橋に開いた商店が始まりです。 Takahashi: The Kewpie Group began in 1918, when the founder Toichiro Nakashima opened a store in the Nihonbashi district of Tokyo. Later the company became a manufacturer and seller of high-quality foods, including Japan’s first mayonnaise and marmalade products. The company built its head oce here in Shibuya in 1968. After 40 years, considering decrepit state and operating eciency, the time had come for a new building.Matsui: Due to a lack of oce space, you were renting space in a neighboring building.Waida: Yes, and we wanted to bring all of those operations into one building. Around the same time, plans were being made to replace the aging Sengawa plant (Chofu, Tokyo) with a research and development center for the group. With a view toward the future, we decided to go forward with a major reorganization of the oces scattered around the Tokyo area.Takahashi: The new building is part of the business center strategy of Kewpie, the main tenant. In 2013 Kewpie opened a research and development center in Sengawa, and renovated it in 2015. It is positioned as a product center. The group’s training center in Nakagawara (Chofu, Tokyo) is positioned as a personnel development center. And with the construction of this new head oce, Shibuya is positioned as a market development center. With the completion of the new head oce in 2016, we have moved to full-scale implementation of a strategy of organic collaboration between these three business centers.A Facade to Inspire the New ShibuyaMatsui: The Shibuya district is in the midst of a major redevelopment. Ten years from now, the area around the station will look very dierent. The site for this project lies northeast of the station, on a short sloping street (Mitake-dori) that connects Meiji-dori and Aoyama-dori. It can be seen from intersection at Miyashita Park and from the train windows of the JR Yamanote Line. From the time of our rst proposal, we regarded the facade as a key point.
